Like most of us, Australia-based singer-songwriter GRAACE has used the long period of lockdown as a time to self-reflect and fall back in love with music. Now, she returns with her deeply personal alt-pop single “Sentimental”. Solely relying on the sincerity of GRAACE’s songwriting and her gentle delivery, the track feels like an insight into a quiet thought she is only expressing to herself.
The raw emotion of her soul-searching narrative is communicated through its brooding chords and a wistful vocal line, while the introspective lyrics deliver a sense of melancholy. Comparable to a soft lullaby, she radiates comfort between her warm vocal lines.
“I wrote ‘Sentimental’ as a letter to my past self,” GRAACE says on the track. “I’ve spent the past two years hibernating from most people, moving on from my old life and growing up. I needed to break out of the mental jail that I put myself in: accept my flaws, not give up on myself, and let myself grow.”
Accompanied with a lo-fi music video, “Sentimental” is brought to life in a VHS style visual that perfectly captures the nostalgic ambience of the track. Like a home video you’d watch to relive old memories, the visual illustrates GRAACE’s message in the single as she sings “you’re too sentimental for your own good”.
“I’m always going to be a sentimental person, but the biggest thing I’ve learnt from my early 20’s is that memories are just lessons for the future,” she comments on the themes of her heart-on-sleeve release.
