Blessed with a prolific knack for crafting a good hook, Arkansas duo joan are back with their first new cut of 2021. Hot on the heels from last year’s sophomore EP cloudy and its recent reimagining partly cloudy, the band debut the syrupy and summery sound of new single “so good”.
The first outing from their upcoming double EP project the wave era – set to drop in full later in the year, with new tracks landing on the first Thursday of every month – “so good” encapsulates ‘classic joan’, channelling laidback 90s R&B basslines and lackadaisically plucked guitars.
Irresistible melodies capture the potent nostalgia of Y2K pop, with the smooth vocals of bandmates Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford embellishing the top like a sticky icing glaze. Needless to say, it’s pretty sweet.
“[‘so good’ is ] about feeling like you’re meant to be with someone who just walked in the room,” share joan of the idea behind the track. “it’s about being around someone that just makes your life feel good. it’s about wishing that person was there your whole life, because you didn’t realize how good it could be. here’s hoping you have that someone, or hoping you find them soon”.
