The song is the follow up to recent single “Hring eftir hring” and sees the four-piece in a more laid back mood but sitll very much experimeting with their own singular approach to pop. “We wanted the song to feel kind of timeless, and at the core it does have a very classic pop quality to it,” explains singer and guitarist Bjarni Daníel. “We also wanted to create a conversation between the classic pop structure and a more modern soundscape.”

The band – largely the project of of Daníel and bassist/singer Þóra Birgit – dropped their first EP three months after forming but the pandemic brought on a burst of songwriting through the spring of 2020. Árni Árnason of The Vaccines – also back home for the duration of the pandemic – came on board to produce and is working on the band’s full length debut album, Tveir Dagar, released on 25 August. “Song for my friend, June” is the only song from the record to be sung in English. “The reason for that is simple,” explains Daniel. “This song is a message to our dear friend who’s American and we wanted him to be able to understand its contents.”

The band are a core part of post-dreifing, an art collective formed four years back and made up of young artists from different corners of Reykjavík’s grassroots music scene. With a goal is to build visibility and self-sufficiency for artists through collaboration, the collective has a flat structure and operates as a egalitarian democracy.

Supersport! play next at Iceland Airwaves, running from 3-6 November 2021. Find out more at airwaves.is
